Dental Fillings

What are Fillings?

A dental filling is a restorative treatment for teeth that have been damaged by decay, acid erosion, wear or fractures. Fillings help you regain the regular function of your teeth after they have been damaged. They also help the tooth from decaying further, avoiding more serious complications, and consequently more complex treatments.

Fillings are made of a composite resin material. Depending on your particular needs and the extent of the decay or damage, we at Horizon Dental will be able to help you in deciding the best treatment option to restore your teeth. Keeping the comfort and satisfaction of our patients as top priorities, we are equipped with the latest technology and use the highest quality dental materials so that you will leave with healthy teeth and a bright smile.

When do you need dental fillings?

Brushing and flossing your teeth is an important part of preventing cavities from developing; however, it can be easy to miss certain spots or leftover particles when brushing and flossing. The combination of bacteria, leftover food, acid, and saliva form plaque, and the acids from that plaque dissolve the enamel and underlying tooth structure to create holes which are called cavities.

Cavities can grow larger and deeper over time, and therefore it is important to repair them with fillings to avoid further decay. Larger cavities can weaken the tooth and may need to be restored with either a porcelain onlay, or a porcelain crown. Extremely deep cavities that extend to the nerve in the tooth may require root canal treatment.

Additionally, teeth can become damaged over time by acid erosion or aggressive tooth brushing. Consuming acidic drinks or experiencing acid reflux can dissolve the surface of your teeth, forming pits and gradually wearing away at the protective enamel. Vigorous brushing can wear away the root surface of your tooth leaving a notch near the gumline. In both cases, your tooth can be repaired with a filling to restore the natural appearance and function of your tooth.

Signs and Symptoms That you Need a Filling

When the cavity is in its early stages and just developing, you may not have any symptoms. However, as the decay deepens it may cause a combination of symptoms including:

  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Mild to sharp pain when eating or drinking something sweet, hot, or cold
  • Visible holes or pits in your teeth
  • Brown, black, or white discolouration on the surface of your teeth
  • A chipped or broken tooth

It is important to note that signs and symptoms of dental decay that require fillings vary, and depend on the extent and location. We may require x-rays and further testing to see early signs of decay that are not visible to the naked eye. If you are still unsure, just ask us and we will be happy to answer any questions or concerns.
